The Why

The reason behind Radio Nemiers

Cover: Aigars Sukurs

Radio Nemiers is an independent online radio station for alternative rock and metal. It is built for people who still feel something when a guitar feedbacks, a snare cracks, and a bass shakes the room.

It is not background noise.
It is a statement.

Who Is Behind Radio Nemiers?

My name is Aigars Sukurs aka DJ 130db.

I am a DJ, radio host, web developer, sysadmin, and radio tech. Over my life I have built four radio stations. Radio Nemiers is number four. One more is in progress right now

In daily life I am a quiet, polite person. At concerts I jump from the stage into the crowd. You may see me in the middle of the mosh pit, with no shirt and a split lip, as well.

This mix of discipline and chaos is also what shapes Radio Nemiers.

How It All Started

My radio story started with curiosity. I wanted to know: how does this work?

As a kid I took apart CD players. Later I learned how to build local streams with Winamp and Icecast back in 2000. Then came Linux, C, MySQL, CSS, and everything that keeps a modern radio station alive.

I began as an on-air personality by day and a tech newbie by night. At night I listened to a legendary online alternative rock and metal station from the US: Radio Wazee.

Wazee changed how I think about radio. They did not lock themselves inside one genre. They mixed styles but still kept a strong identity. The result was simple: their station never got boring.

This idea stayed with me.

Leaving and Returning to Radio

In late 2008 I felt I had nothing new to say on air. I left the radio industry.

In 2010 I came back, this time as a radio tech. I learned how music scheduling really works. I spent nights reading the RCS Master Control manual and testing things.

I also noticed something important. Most stations used only a small part of what their tools could do. Maybe 10% of the possibilities.

Understanding programming and rotation logic opened the door to a new career. It also laid the foundation for Radio Nemiers.

Why Radio Nemiers Exists

In 2018 a bar called Nemiers asked me to build a radio station. The idea was simple: bartenders should not waste time searching personal playlists.

I could not say no.

The bar Nemiers is gone now. Radio Nemiers is what remains. It is a small flame that keeps the spirit of the bar alive.

From a radio perspective, Radio Nemiers continues the tradition of Radio Wazee.
It follows the same core idea: genres are tools, not walls.

What Makes Radio Nemiers Different

When people hear “rock radio”, they often think of AC/DC or Led Zeppelin.
When they hear “metal radio”, they think of Black Sabbath, Metallica, or Pantera.

There are hundreds of internet stations that play the same “classic safe bet” songs. They can be fun for a few days. Then they feel predictable.
Radio Nemiers is built to avoid that trap.

The rules are simple:

  • radio must be changing all the time
  • new music must enter
  • old music must leave

To make space for new bands, we say goodbye to some old favorites.
Even my own personal heroes like Rage Against the Machine, Staind, and The Dillinger Escape Plan live outside a 25-year floating window.

It is not easy, but it is the only way to keep the station fresh.

How the Music Is Programmed

Radio Nemiers is an online alternative rock and metal radio station with:

  • Almost 5,000 tracks in active rotation
  • A 3-day rotation window internally (a quick fix for repeat issues that all radio DJs know)
  • Around 500-600 new tracks added every year
  • Music from more than 50 countries

Many people call it a “Latvian alternative rock and metal radio”.
This is true, but also misleading.

The station plays only a small amount of Latvian music. And it is not even physically located in Latvia.

Radio Nemiers is global by design.
If the music fits the vibe, it does not matter where it comes from.

Who This Radio Is For

Radio Nemiers is not for purists. It is not for people who want only one genre, one decade, or one narrow scene.

It is for people who are still becoming adults. For those who skate, ride BMX, or roll on inline skates until the street lights turn on.

It is for those who are not afraid to dance on the bar counter. It is for people who never had their own Wazee, but wish they did.

The Technical Side (For the Nerds)

Technically, Radio Nemiers is a playground for automation. It is where I test ideas that would die in corporate radio.

In big radio networks, new concepts can get stuck in meetings, rules, and “best practices”. Here they can go live in days, not months.

From music scheduling to streaming, from metadata to monitoring, Radio Nemiers is built as a living lab. The next chapter of this story will go deeper into how it all works behind the scenes.

In One Sentence

Radio Nemiers is an independent, global, online alternative rock and metal radio station built to stay fresh, take risks, and keep the spirit of Nemiers alive.
